In our divine religion (Islam), Hajj is the fifth and last pillar. Every Muslim who is sane, healthy and can afford Hajj must perform it once in a lifetime. It consists of a sequence of rituals that are performed in the 12<sup>th </sup>month (Zil Hajj) of the Islamic calendar in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Rituals of Hajj are given as follows;

Ihram is the state in which pilgrims (after taking Ghusl) wear white outfit, that is, two-piece unstitched apparel for men and any loosely fitted outfit for women, which is recommended for her in Shariah.

During Ihram, Pilgrims must abstain themselves from arguing and fighting. They are not allowed to cut hair, clip nails, wearing socks or shoes (except sandal that expose the instep). Covering the head is strictly forbidden to men. Women should not use perfumed products. Engaging in Marital relations is also prohibited.

It is mandatory for a pilgrim to take on Ihram and to make an intention of performing Hajj. Pilgrims should recite Talbiyyah when intending to enter into state of Ihram.

Haram is the Holy Mosque, pilgrims puts forth their right foot first while entering in it and say supplication.

Pilgrims perform circumambulation (Tawaf) seven times around the Ka’abah (a sacred place in the middle of Haram) in a clock-wise direction. Each circumambulation (Tawaf) starts and ends at the black stone i.e. Hajr-e-Aswad (a cornerstone, which is at the southern corner of Ka’abah). If possible, pilgrim should approach to touch and kiss the Black stone, and if not, he/she can just make a sign with his right hand facing the black stone.

After completing seven circuits of Tawaf, pilgrims approaches Maqam-e-Ibrahim and pray two Rakats. During first Rakat, they should recite Surah Al-Kafiroon and Surah Al-Ikhlas should recite during the second one.

Sa’i is walking back and forth seven times between two small hills (i.e. Safa and Marwa). During Sa’i, pilgrims may recite Quran and recite supplications.

8th Zil Hajj is said to be the day of Tarwiyyah. The pilgrims call out Talbiyyah of Hajj on this day. They camp in Mina and offer Zohar, Asar, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr, shortening all prayers into two units without combining them.

When the sun rises on 9th Zil Hajj, all pilgrims goes to Mount Arafat reciting Talbiyyah. They stays there until the evening and prays Zil Hajj and Asar combined at Zohar time, making each one two units. The last sermon of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivered on Mount Arafat. In Arafat, pilgrims spend most of their time in prayer, repentance and seek for forgiveness of ALLAH.

From noon until dusk, pilgrims perform Wuquf. In Wuquf, they stand alone facing the Qibla and ask ALLAH for forgiveness and mercy. However, there is no precise rule of standing all the time, pilgrims can sit, talk and can eat too because fasting is not allowed on this day (for pilgrims). Prayers offered to ALLAH for forgiveness of sins. Pilgrims tries to make as many supplications as they can because the best of supplication is the supplication of Arafat day.

After the sunsets, pilgrims goes to Muzdalifah with tranquility. At Muzdalifah, pilgrims offer Maghrib and Isha prayer. It is permissible to combine Maghrib and Isha prayer. After prayer, they collect stones for “Ramy (stoning of the devil)”. Facing the Qibla, pilgrims should recite Takbeer, supplicate ALLAH and declare his oneness at Mehshar-ul-Haram. Mehshar-ul-Haram is a small hill in Muzdalifah. Pilgrims are allowed to take rest and sleep till Fajr. Before the sun has risen, they set off for Mina reciting the Talbiyyah.

After Fajr prayer of 10th Zil Hajj, pilgrims head back to Mina and perform Ramy. Reciting Takbeer, they throw seven small stones at Jamarat-ul-Aqabah.

Ramy should be end before the time of Zawal. After Ramy, pilgrims slaughter their sacrificial animal. After sacrifice, men (pilgrims) can shorten or shave their hair, whereas, women (pilgrims) can only cut a fingertip length of their hair. With that, pilgrims are allowed to end their Ihram completely. They bathes and wear new clothes.

Now, pilgrims goes to Makkah and make Tawal-ul-Ifadah, seven times around Ka’abah. Following Tawaf-ul-Ifadah, they do Sa’i in seven lengths. On the completion of Tawaf, everything is lawful for them which is prohibited in the state of Ihram.

11th, 12th and 13th Zil Hajj are said to be the days of Tashreeq. Pilgrims go back to Mina and stay there for Tashreeq days. They stones the three Jamarah, each one with seven stones, accompanied by Takbir.

Twaf Al-Wadaa is the farewell Tawaf of Ka’abah, it marks the end of Hajj. Sa’i does not perform in farewell tawaf. After Tawaf, pilgrims should leave the house of ALLAH by their left foot first and saying supplication.

Every Ibadah in Islam is attached with some virtues and so is Umrah which is one of the most important Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and is considered as an important and sacred obligation for Muslims. The blessings of Umrah are countless and numerous.

To earn virtues, goodness and blessings of Allah, Muslims perform Umrah throughout the year. They perform each obligation with great desire, love, intensity and gratitude to achieve the blessings of Umrah. Umrah is not only a spiritual journey towards the house of Allah, the Holy Kaaba but also in return Muslims earn loads of uncountable rewards, righteousness virtues and blessings of Umrah.

Throughout a Muslim’s life, it’s seen that each Muslim longs to visit Kaaba at least once in his life and be the guest of Allah. With the same he gets bestowed by during Zia ’rat of the Tomb of their beloved Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H) in Medina; thereby praying in the Sacred and Blessed of the mosque of Islam, Masjid un Nabwi.

The feelings and blessings of Umrah that he enjoys being Allah’s guest and those magical moments and worship that he performs adds to his grace and bounties of the lifetime. The inner peace, gratitude and calmness that a Muslim enjoys cannot be described in words. Following are some sayings of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) related to blessings and rewards of Umrah

Remove Poverty And Sins

Ibn Abbas (RA) said: Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said,

“Perform Hajj and Umrah consecutively; for they remove poverty and sin as bellows remove impurity from iron.”

When Muslims travel so far for the pilgrimage of Umrah, his heart is free from worldly lust and he seeks the path of Allah and hadith of Prophet Muhammad at every step and asks for forgiveness for his sins that would make him pure and refined, free from all wrong thinking and doings. That’s the blessings of Umrah.

Umrah does not only help Muslims in expiation of sins but is also considered as equivalent to jihad for some Muslims.

The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said:

The translation of the Hadith:

“Whomever leaves his home only for the purpose of Hajj or ‘Umrah, and dies, it becomes guaranteed upon Allah to grant him the Paradise, if He takes away his soul and if He returns him; He’ll return him with rewards and gains”.

Umrah is also known as a minor Hajj and it can be performed throughout the year except during hajj days. He who goes for Umrah and travels to Mecca to perform the same is considered a pilgrim until he reaches back home. Till all this time he is the guest of Allah and he answers all his wishes if they seek his forgiveness, He forgives them.

As per Islamic belief, Muslims strive to perform Umrah many times in their lives. Knowing about the blessings of Umrah, Muslims believe that performing Umrah can help them to expiate their sins and protects them from poverty and scarcity of livelihood throughout their lives.

It’s Muslims belief that spending anything for the sake of Allah and in the path of Allah results in more blessings and he is bestowed with rewards. As Allah bestows his followers and true lovers with all his blessings and rewards as promised in Quran. Umrah is an amazing journey where Muslims yearns Allah’s favour and protection throughout this sacred pilgrimage and earned the blessings of Umrah

The accurate meaning of word Ihram in the Arabic language is “Haram” (to restrain yourself). Because by the law of Allah the person who is wearing Ihram (called Muhrim) has to restrain himself from certain allowed and Halal activities of Islam like wearing sewn clothes (for men), apply olive oil in the hair, hunting in the forest, etc.

You can say that Ihram is the uniform or prerequisite for Hajj and Umrah which must be worn by pilgrims in a prescribed manner as described by Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) instead of normal clothes. Ihram consists of two pieces of unsewn clothes, one for upper body and one for lower body (for men). The Ihram for both Hajj and Umrah is the same but different for men and women.

Method of Putting Ihram and Its Prerequisite:

The method of wearing Ihram for Hajj and Umrah is the same but differs in the intention of wearing.

Trim your nails if needed because this act is Haram (not allowed in Ihram).

Take a bath (according to Faraiz).

Perform Ablution.

Use Miswak.

Apply fragrance as after wearing Ihram you are restricted to use perfume

Now Take Ihram (Two pieces of unsewn clothes), one for upper body which is used as a shawl and second for lower body which will be worn like “tahbands”.
Take Ihram of towel clothing as it will be easy in movement rather than any other fabric. It is advisable to take a big shawl for Ihram, this will help you to cover the body properly.

Remove all the sewn clothes even cap hand gloves, socks etc.

You may also take a belt with a zipper wallet for Ihram to keep your passports and money with you. The nylon belt is durable and reliable.

Video Tutorial Of Wearing Ihram

Ihram for Women:

Women are not restricted to wear unsewn clothes. They wear their usual clothes with hand gloves and socks. The Ihram for women is to cover their head properly with scarf or else and not to cover their faces.

The whole Mecca is Holy and the Blessings of Allah showers everywhere in Mecca and Medina but there are some places where Dua, the supplication towards Allah specifically accepted. Mostly of these places are situated in Masjid ul Haraam. These places are here with the reference of famous book Ahsan-ul-Wi’a li Adab-id–Dua so that the pilgrims should make supplication with awareness, attention and great dedication.

Mataf:

Mataf is the place where pilgrims order to complete their seven rounds around the Holy Kaaba. This area in Masjid ul Haraam is very blessed and supplication are accepted here.

Inside the Holy Kaaba:

The most blessed part of Haram is the inside of Holy Kaaba. People cannot approach to there because the gate of Holy Kaaba is open twice or thrice in a year only for cleaning by the King itself.

Multazim:

Multazim is the name of one of the four sides of Kaaba where people go for confessing of their sins in front of Allah and ask for forgiveness.

Mizab e Rehmat:

It is the just like a pipeline from the Roof of Kaaba from where the water of rain and washing dropout, Pilgrims face the Mizab e Rehmat and supplicates as narrated in Hajj or Umrah guide.

Hatwim (Hateem):

According to Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) Hatwim is considered as the inner part of Kaaba, one who offers two rakaat Salah in hatwim (hateem) is like to offer Salah inside the Holy Kaaba. It is the place where supplication is accepted.

Rukn e Yamani:

Rukn e Yamani is the one side of Kaaba, the supplication accepted here especially when pilgrim passes through this wall during Tawaf.

Maqam e Ibrahim:

It is the order of Allah in the Holy Quran that Muslims offer the Salah behind the Maqam e Ibrahim, and it Sunnah to offer two Rakaat after the completion of Tawaf and ask for the Blessings of Allah.

Near Zam Zam well:

Nowadays it is totally impossible to supplicate near the zam zam well as the government closed the well for the general public. Pipelines are spread under the ground to supply the zam zam Water to all over the Haram.

Safa and Marwah:

Safa and Marwah are two small hills near to Kaaba now in Masjid ul Haram, these both hills are sacred hills because of the belonging to Hazrat Ismail (A.S) and His mother Bibi Hajra (R.A).

Arafat:

Arafat is the ground where every pilgrim must be present at 9th of Zul Hujja in Hajj. In this ground, supplicates are accept especially the place where Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) stayed.

Mina:

Mina is another Holy ground where people ask for forgiveness especially in Hajj days.

Muzdalifah:

Stay in Muzdalifah is the part of Hajj and it is a very important place for Dua during Hajj days.

Masjid un Nabawi :

One of the Noble Companion, Hudhayfah Bin Yaman said, “People used to ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) about good things, but I used to ask him about bad things because I was afraid that they might overtake me.” What a beautiful example to follow! And thus, on a similar note, we have listed some of the common mistakes:

Ihram

• Focus on what you are saying when you say Talbiyyah.
• Capturing pictures of yourselves in Ihram is wrong. Pilgrims should only concentrate on their Ibadah. Taking pictures for show off might contradict your good faith.
• Do change your Ihram if it get dirty, because, cleanliness is half of faith.
• Shaving beard before, during or after Ihram is not permissible. It’s the Sunnah of our Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).
• Pilgrims should shower with unscented soaps, because, perfumes or any fragrance is not allowed in Ihraam.
• Women should only wear the clothes which are recommended for her in Shariah.
• In Ihraam, pilgrims must abstain themselves from arguing or quarrelling.
• It is not permissible for men to cover their head in Ihraam.

In Tawaf:

• Touching the black stone is not necessary for acceptance of Tawaf. If it is impossible for you to touch the black stone then you can just raise your right hand towards it and say Allah-o-Akbar.
• Do not kiss or face your hand to the Yameni corner. You can only touch it.
• Do not worship Hajr-e-Aswad (black stone). Prophet (Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam) never worshipped it.
• Do not touch the walls of Ka’abah during Tawaf. Pilgrims can only touch the black stone and Yameni corner.

In Sa’i:

• Do not climb to the mountain of Safa and Marwah.
• You can take breaks when performing Sa’i.
• During Sa’i, there is no specific du’a. Pilgrims may recite Quran and say supplication.

Shaving or Trimming The Hair:

• Pilgrims (men) should shave their head completely. If they trim, they will have to take hair from all sides of their head.
• Pilgrims (women) can only cut a fingertip length of their hair.
• You cannot take off your Ihraam before shaving or trimming the hair.

In Mina, Arafah and Muzdalifah:

• Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) spend the day of 8th Dhul-Hijja in Mina. Pilgrims, sometimes, skip this and move to Arafah.
• In Mina, you are just allowed to shorten your prayer but do pray at their correct time.
• Do make the most of Arafah day. You should know the significance of this day and make as many supplications as you can.
• Pilgrims are not allowed to fast on the day of Arafah.
• Do not leave Arafah before sunsets.
• Do not pray Maghrib in Arafah. Do pray it after reaching Muzdalifah, combined with Isha prayer.

When performing Ramy (stoning):

• Do not wash your stones.
• Do not say Bismillah when throwing stone, just say Allah-o-Akbar.
• Do not curse or throw sandals/wood at Jamarah. Jamarah is not a devil, nor devil are tied in it for stoning. It is the command of ALLAH to say ALLAH -o-Akbar when throwing each stone.
• Just throw seven pebble (separately) at each Jamarah.
• Stoning should be done before the time of Zawal.

In Tawaf Al-Wada (farewell tawaf):

• Do perform stoning of final Jamarah before Tawaf Al-Wada.
• Do not perform Sa’i in farewell Tawaf.
• Do spend the night of 10th Dhul-Hijja and 11th Dhul-Hijja in Mina.
• Do leave Makkah after the farewell Tawaf, otherwise, you will have to make another Tawaf.

Oh ALLAH, do not take us to account if we forget or make a mistake. [Noble Quran 2:286]

Following are the most important guidelines to perform Hajj.

Congratulations to you on your journey of Hajj to Mecca and Madinah.

Be sure that your documents for this journey are ready at least 3 to 4 days before departure. Take some guidance from an experienced person, this will be beneficial for you during traveling.

The pilgrim (Haji) must have an intention that I will perform Hajj solely for the attainment of the pleasure of Almighty Allah.

You must be stable enough to perform hajj, physically, financially and mentally. If these elements are missing you will lack with your worship.

Pilgrims must learn the rules and methods to perform Hajj and Umrah instead of copy other’s action along with Sa’ai and Tawaf supplications.

Pilgrims are not allowed by authorities to carry with them fruits, cooked food, sweet-meats etc so be sure that carry some half cooked food with proper steal cane packing

Make some walking habit on a daily basis, 15 days before going to Hajj as you have to walk 7 to 8 kilometers there form your accommodation to Masjid including Tawaf and Sa’ ai. (To walk 45 minutes a day is also very beneficial from the medical point of view.)

During 5 days of hajj Stick to a very strict diet, this will be beneficial for you, as there is a long queue outside the bathrooms in Mina and Arafat.

Women should take flat slippers instead of high heels slippers because you have to walk a lot.

While traveling you should not take any parcel or packet from strangers even to hold, sometimes this will put you on legal issues.

Never forget to take a prescription with your medicines as this will be strictly checked at the airport

Most importantly you must know the Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayer) and Qasr Namaz (The method of prayer in Journey-traveling).

Hajj is one of the important pillar of Islam. During Hajj season, so many people gather at the holy cities (Makkah and Medina) to perform Hajj. Because of the crowd from all over the world, there is extremely high risk of spreading viruses and illness which can be harmful for all the Muslims.

It is essential to get the proper vaccination before going for Hajj because, due to the mob, all the pilgrims stand/sit close to each other to perform the rituals of Hajj, so there are the chances of spreading diseases among them, and though, it is necessary to be aware of Hajj vaccination details. Saudi Arabia has strict policies of vaccination to prevent this danger. These policies are for the benefit of all the Muslims because if Health Ministry of Saudi Arabia is inactive in this regard then there will be thousands of avoidable fatalities of precious and innocent lives and Islam does not allow killing of innocent people.

According to the policy of Saudi Arabia’s Health Ministry, pilgrims can receive two types of vaccination, which are given as follows;

If anyone fails to produce the certificates of mandatory vaccinations then the ministry of Saudi Arabia will not allow them to enter the holy cities of Saudi Arabia without getting vaccinated, which can create a panic situation for you and your family members.

According to the Ministry of Saudi Arabia, some of the mandatory vaccinations are given below;

Meningococcal Meningitis

All the pilgrims around the world should get this vaccination. This vaccination has two kinds for Hajj. The first one is efficacious for three years and the second one is efficacious for five years. You need to be get vaccinated again, if you had a vaccination of first type which is more than three years ago. Similarly for the second type, you need to have this vaccination again, if you got this vaccination five years before.

Yellow Fever

It is mandatory to get vaccination of yellow fever before going for Hajj. But, if you are already vaccinated for this disease then there is no need to get vaccination again. You will just have to show your certificate.

However, if you have lost the certificate, then you will have to follow the Hajj rules and will have to get the vaccination of this disease.

Poliomyelitis

Health institutes worked hard for the removal of Polio from all over the world but there are still some countries which are not yet safe from this disease.

Countries which are Polio free are still at the risk of developing Poliomyelitis again if proper steps are not assured.

The health Ministry of Saudi Arabia recommends to get all the necessary vaccines, so that, pilgrims can easily perform all the rituals of Hajj. It is, somehow, for their own benefit.

This year, Health ministry recommended two vaccines for Hajj;

Seasonal Influenza:

It is the most common virus and it can easily be spread among people. During Hajj, people from different countries gather at one place, so, there is a high chance that they can be a victim of this virus. Hence, it is recommended to get vaccination for this virus before going for Hajj.

Dengue Virus

It spread by a mosquito bite. Though, these kind of mosquitoes does not exist in Makkah and Madina but it is possible that they might exist in surrounding cities. So it is recommended to take preventive measures during Hajj. If you are coming from a dengue-affected country then it is recommended to follow the WHO methods.

Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Pneumonia and Tetanus are some other recommended vaccinations for Hajj.

Some countries generate false certificates for Hajj vaccinations. They think that these certificates are unnecessary and bothersome for the pilgrims.

Mostly, the Hajj operators play this lying game to maximize their profit. Being a Muslim, we all know that lying is a sin and the consequences of lying for the sacred worship of Hajj will be devastating. How can someone even think of spending money, energy and time for Hajj based on a lie?

Thus, make sure about the proper steps of Hajj vaccination from your Hajj operator and ensure that you receive the vaccination which has best health standards.

Hajj vaccination costs are not expensive. All the pilgrims can afford the cost of these vaccinations easily. Pilgrims can also avail the Hajj offers and discounts by various governments of their country.

Conclusively, it is very important for pilgrims to take due measures for their own health and for the health of so many fellow Muslims as well, who come from different countries of the world to worship one true God, ALLAH.

We pray for all the pilgrims who are performing Hajj this year. May they all are blessed with the best of both the worlds, Ameen.

Save
